Effects of Plant Growth Regulators on Axillary Bud Initiation in Branchless Chrysanthemums (Dendranthema grandiflorum Kitamura

Abstract
This study was conducted to clarify the effects of plant growth regulators on axillary bud initiation in branchless chrysanthemums. The foliar spray treatments of 50 ppm IAA, GA, BA, and ABA after the expression of branchlessness did not affect axillary bud initiation. Foliar spray treatment of 800-1,600 ppm ethephon significantly increased axillary bud setting, and the number of buds was increased as the times of treatments was increased. In summer, synergic effect appeared between ethephon and high temperature and effect of ethephon was higher in September than in summer. Treatments only on shoot apex and lower part were also effective, but the effects were weaker than the whole foliar treatment. Ethylene evolution was 494.9 ¥ìL/g/hr even 96 hours after 800 ppm ethephon treatment. Ethylene evolution increased as the temperature increased from 5¡É to 35¡É. But the amounts were lower in temperature of 40¡É than in temperature of 35¡É.
